In a landmark project initiated by the design legend Gunilla Allard, the iconic Swedish design house Lammhults has turned to our studio for some new creative thinking to kick off 2021. The result is Sunny, a versatile, low-slung and supremely comfortable armchair conceived by us and Allard, a long-standing Lammhults collaborator.

“The task was to make a ‘softer sitting’ experience – a little lower, more relaxed, cooler and more dreamy… Something with a lounge feeling that crossed the border between public and private.” Gunilla Allard

Launched last month, during the annual Stockholm Design week, Sunny is an elegantly simple design formed from a sinuous steel piping frame, topped with a mattress-like cushion. In a departure from Lammhults’ normal production process, We at Note and Gunilla Allard chose to bypass the established dimensions used to develop contract furniture and to instead adopt the contours of the human body as their principal reference point.

The innovation embodied in Sunny is functional as well as visual – a unique ‘U’-shaped zinc connector allows multiple chairs to be linked together in different formations, elevating Sunny from standalone product to endlessly versatile furniture system.

Sunny’s bent-steel tubular frame is fitted with a robust load-bearing canvas ‘basket’, giving the chair its light, thin and airy appearance. It is topped with a thick, soft cushion that is sewn with channels, creating a striped appearance reminiscent of a down-filled blanket.

“Its simple construction – a mattress resting in a steel frame – looks great in retail or domestic environments, and it has been built to withstand wear and tear as the contact market demands. Unusually for contract furniture, every element is removable, washable and replaceable – you can change everything.”
